Mayflower Street Residents to Get Assistance

On Monday, we showed you the deplorable conditions in which residents of Mayflower Street are living.  While the situation had been that way well before the weekend flooding, Area Representative Patrick Faber says that help is on the way.  During today’s cabinet meeting, Faber was given assurance that immediate relief is coming to that area of his vicinity beginning with the provision of building materials to repair homes.

“You were asking about the Mayflower area; they will certainly receive those packages later on this evening…actually we go out this evening. And we also prepare a thousand meals in our kitchen. You know that we have the south side primary school kitchen in our constituency and because classes were out yesterday that kitchen did not operate of the students, so we asked that those meals come to our residents who of course were flooded out; their groceries were flooded, they can’t probably do cooking and so on. So we distributed all of those meals, a thousand plates, into the night last night and we intent to try to do some of that today as well. Over the two days though we have been collecting—you see my desk filled with all kinds of applications here—we wanted people to come in and tell us what the damages were as it relates to appliances, the flooding, their bedding and that is the kind of relief that will come next. As I explained earlier, we are giving out blankets and mattresses this afternoon. We are also assessing the damages to the houses and we are giving housing relief. I’m just back from cabinet as you know and the prime minister has given us the okay to further compile these assessments and to submit for immediate relief, giving zinc and plywood and whatever else people need to return to a sense of normalcy.”

Late this evening, a team from Faber’s office was deployed into the area to distribute relief items.
