Juventus and Calcutta draw in BPFL opener

Story PictureJames Adderley, Reporting
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and we welcome you to this week?s version of Sports Monday. And we?ll start off by saying I?ve got my football now, more info available now. Stay home, I?m able now…yeah you get the picture as the Belize Premier Football League opened the 2005 Regents Cup Tournament over the weekend.

We head to Sugar City, Orange Walk, where the Peoples Stadium hosted an internecine dispute between three time champion Juventus and new comer Calcutta Bulls and it?s a pumped up Bulls team that gets the people going.

The Bulls display exciting football when number fourteen Froylan Guy embarrasses this Juventus defender and finds the head of number eleven, who unleashes a high riser.

Juventus jumps back with this right away shot from Oliver Hendricks that gets away from him.

Oliver then engineers this wicked push through to Brother Christopher but Chris just wasn?t sure what he wanted to do in this situation and tarried too long.

On this press Christopher gets to show off his pace but gets robbed by solid defensive work. So Oliver decides to get back into the swing of things with this long distance screamer that finds the cross piece.

At the other end, Esteban Hall shows he?s still got range with this offering that inches outside the sticks.

Folks, Juventus might come back controlling the flow up to now but Charlie Slusher and the Juventus defence simply miss played this bounce off the crossbar. Froylan Guy finds a gift to give the Bulls a 1-zip lead in the conversion forty minutes in.

The Bulls could have doubled the lead off this crossing kickoff when number eleven intercepts this bad pass but allowed goalkeeper Charlie Slusher to make amends. And at the half Calcutta Bulls take a 1-zip lead to the locker room.

Juventus comes out of intermission in an all out bid for a goal. So Oliver Hendricks fires this floater that drifts to the back of the net. And maybe number eight should have given the three time champ the equalizer on this opportunity.

I guess after this move, Christopher Hendricks must feel that this is not the ballgame for him to score in.

Meanwhile two misplays by the Bulls defence almost cost them the dreaded auto goal but they came away unscathed.

Yes, Chris we do admire the header–but Juventus needs a goal.

Folks the relentless Juventus pressure pays off late in the ballgame when this centre finds the head of Oliver Hendricks and this time the sticker makes no mistake and we?re tie at 1 a piece.

People can you believe this big time defensive ups in time and can you believe the Bulls issue a grand pardon–well they do. The ballgame grinds to a 1-1 final score.

In other results from around the League Kremandala Lake got clobbered 2 up at the hand of defending Champion Sagitun Saturday night. Marathon Champion San Pedro Seahawks doubled Print Belize Griga two to one while out West, Cayo Avengers and Kulture Yabra of Belize City halted to a scoreless draw.

Looking to the weekend, Kremandala Lake faces Juventus Saturday night at the MCC Grounds. On Sunday Kulture Yabra will host the San Pedro Seahawks Print Belize Griga visits the Calcutta Bulls and Sagitun heads West to the Cayo Avengers.

We certainly want to thank our cameramen for their great work over the weekend. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
