Strike effects felt contrywide…
In a roundup of how the strike played out elsewhere in the country correspondents report that in San Ignacio and Benque Veijo about half of businesses were closed. In Dangriga and Orange Walk a majority of businesses closed their doors although banks remained open. In Corozal there were slightly more businesses open although, like in Belmopan, a majority were reported closed. In Punta Gorda it was hard to tell as Thursday is traditionally a day when shops are not open. Merchants we spoke to said they plan to open on Friday. In San Pedro, with its heavy dependence on tourism, it was business as usual and even a number of schools held classes. Across the spectrum of district towns it appeared that students and teachers stayed home while public officers came to work.
