Leonardo Cano is New B.S.C.F.A. Chairman
Seasoned canero Leonardo Cano is the newly-elected Chairman of the Belize Sugar Cane Farmers Association. He succeeds Ezequiel Cansino as chief presiding officer of the largest group of cane farmers in the country. Cano’s leadership of the organization comes at a critical juncture when the membership of the B.S.C.F.A. is concerned about the future of its livelihood.
On the Phone: Oscar Alonzo, Chief Executive Officer, B.S.C.F.A.
“There’s no reshuffle. Under the bye-laws of the association the chairman of the committee of management rotates on a yearly basis, okay. So last year the Orange Walk division held the chairmanship and based on that principle of rotation, this year it is Corozal division’s turn and this is why now we have the chairman being Mr. Leonardo Cano who is the chairman of the branch but now he has been elected as chairman of the B.S.C.F.A. So it’s not a reshuffle, it’s a change that is provided for under the bye-laws of the association. So he’s the chairman for this period November first, 2015 to October thirty-first, 2015. Mr. Cansino is still on the committee of management, I think he is the vice chairman, okay.”
Cano, as mentioned, is head of the Corozal division of sugar cane farmers.
