Island Lions help Tsunami victims

It did not have the publicity of the tsunami relief concert held in Belize City but on Sunday, the Lions Clubs of San Pedro and Caye Caulker pooled their resources to launch their own fundraising drive. Maybe it was the fact that they all live on the water’s edge and can identify with victims half a world away, but–whatever the reason–the islanders donated big. Over the course of nine hours over twenty thousand dollars were collected in San Pedro and some three thousand six hundred were added from Caye Caulker. The monies have since been sent to the International Association of Lions Clubs as part of that body’s International Disaster Relief Efforts. According to local Lions, clubs from around the world have already contributed food, clothing, medicine and nearly five hundred thousand dollars in cash for short and long term relief efforts.
