BTV’s Wil Maheia Says Sarstoon FOB is only Rhetoric
Last week, during the tenth anniversary celebration of the Belize National Coast Guard, Minister of national Security announced that on December ninth ground will be broken on the new and very controversial Sarstoon Forward Operating Base. The announcement is consequential but activist and Belizean Territorial Volunteer Wil Maheia says that’s all it will likely be…just an announcement.

“They’re breaking ground where? I just went to Barranco last weekend and the material they put there five years ago is still on the ground, grass growing over it. They can push anything over the Belize City people it seems like, so when they talk about breaking ground I don’t see any ground breaking. The Coast Guard station being built on Hunting Caye…from the time we broke the story of Guatemalans building it, from then not another nail has been lifted. We can finish that station. We can spend millions and millions on campaigning but we can’t finish the Coast Guard station, the base that is more than three quarters finished at Hunting Caye.”
Construction on the Hunting Caye Forward Operating Base was halted in October 2014, just over a year ago.
