GOB employee charged with forgery
A former government employee has been arrested and charged in connection with a series of thefts using forged documents over the last six months. According to police reports, twenty-six year old Gabriel Mai worked as a clerk at the Orange Walk office of the Ministry of Works up until November of last year. As part of his duties, Mai had access to fuel order books and it is alleged that he filled out those orders with fake signatures of his supervisors and then drove to the gas station to put fuel in his car. Mai’s scam was uncovered through the reconciliation process of an internal audit of the ministry. Mai, who is no longer on the ministry’s payroll, was charged this week with nineteen counts of forgery. According to Orange Walk police, additional charges are expected to be filed such as uttering upon a forged document or obtaining property by deception. Meanwhile Gabriel Mai is out on bail.
