…while an O.W. cane farmer meets the same fate
It wasn’t long before the year’s second fatal gunshot rang out, this time in the Orange Walk District. According to police reports, fifty-eight year old Ramon Flota, a cane farmer of San Lazaro Village, left his home around six Thursday morning to go to his field situated seven miles south of Trinidad Village. But when he failed to return by this morning, his family became increasingly concerned and went looking for him. Instead of a happy reunion, one of Flota’s sons found his father lying on the ground amidst his cane, dead from what appeared to be a single gunshot wound to the left side of his head. Orange Walk police have been interviewing a number of persons and they now believe that the murder may be the result of a land dispute. Authorities say the Flota family told them that they have received a number of death threats that are a result of a quarrel over ownership of the agricultural property. Police say they are now looking for two suspects.
