Shot to the head kills Bz. City man…
Coming off one of the deadliest years in recent memory it has taken less than a week to chalk up the year’s first act of homicide. The venue? Where else but Belize City. The weapon of choice? Handgun. News 5’s Patrick Jones has more.
Patrick Jones, Reporting
The bloodstains on the shoulder of the Northern Highway near Mile 5, mark where the life of twenty-four year old Delrick Sankey came to a violent end. His aunt Pearl Kelly says she was already asleep on Thursday night when she was awakened to the bad news.
Pearl Kelly, Aunt of the Deceased
?Well about ten thirty I was awaken and they told me that my nephew Delrick Sankey was shot in the back of his neck and he died on the spot on the Northern Highway.?
Family members are left wondering what the father of one, who lives on Neal Penn Road, would have been doing at that location, so late in the night.
Pearl Kelly
?Well, I don?t know because I understand he left with a friend. But so far I don?t know why they killed my nephew because he has a woman and a child to live for. I don?t know he?s that kind of person that would get himself in problems. I don?t know why they would want to shoot my nephew that is the reason why I am asking. Why they killed my nephew??
Patrick Jones
?As far as the family know, did he have a fight with anybody that might have wanted to kill him??
Pearl Kelly
?Well not that I know of because he got shot at the back of his neck long ago, when he and somebody had something and now he and that person was reasoning. So I don?t think that it is that same misunderstanding.?
In fact Kelly says her nephew, who had turned his life around was trying to make amends with the man who shot him in 1999. Family members tell News 5 that last night, Sankey left his common-law wife and baby son at home and went out with a friend. That was the last time he was seen alive.
Patrick Jones
?Do you think that this friend who he was with was the person that shot him? ?
Pearl Kelly
?Well, that?s what people thinks, but, I just wish we left everything to God, you know. We don?t want to even up with him. We just want to left everything to God?s hand and ask God to pray over them and let them stop this shooting because it is grieving the family and friends and he is loved by many, and he is sadly missed.?
?He?s a person always making fun. If he sees you down he would always come and say, ?look ya man life can be better.? He would wake up and always di sing for you, provoking you, tickling you and those sorts of things, you know. He?s a completely changed person for years. So I don?t know what would be the cause for them to shoot him like that. I really would want to know why? Why? He is loved by many. The neighbours can say he is been loved.?
Patrick Jones, for News 5.
Sankey is not a man known for bad luck, as in October of 2002 he won a Lotto jackpot worth over ninety thousand dollars.
