Briceño Nominated for P.U.P. Leader Position

John Briceño

Turning to politics….At news time, there is only one confirmed name in the leadership race for P.U.P. Party Leader. The deadline is Tuesday, December fifteenth, but John Briceño was officially nominated today via letter to PUP Secretary-General Henry Charles Usher. Briceño’s nomination included endorsement signatures from the executive committee chairmen of four constituencies in Orange Walk, three in Corozal and Belize Rural South. Notably, and not surprisingly, Briceño has not been endorsed by the Corozal Southeast Constituency of Florencio Marin Junior.  We say Briceño is the only one in the leadership race at this point because apparently outgoing leader Francis Fonseca is still undecided. On Friday, media houses carried the story of Fonseca’s return because Deputy Leader Julius Espat called around to say that it was practically a done deal.

Francis Fonseca

But today when we contacted Fonseca for an interview he told us via text that, “once a decision is made I will gladly do so.” News Five has tried to get a comment from Cordel Hyde who early on indicated that he would be in the race, but he has declined comment at this time. A convention has been scheduled for the thirty-first of January to determine the leadership of the party.
