Bzean inmates enter ring of rehab
James Adderley Reporting
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and you?ve just logged on to the show we call Sports Monday. The Kolbe Foundation in alliance with the Belize Amateur Boxing Federation presented a fight card at the Civic Centre yesterday but they might have been operating in a vacuum as far as fan attendance went.
Neverthless, we must give credit to the athletes who made the card and in the first competitive match both Genesis Blair and Daniel Ach come out fighting at a hundred and twenty-three pounds apiece.
Early in the fight, Ach tries to establish himself but a three punch combination from Blair backs him up.
And then this barrage in the third that finds Blair tagging Arch repeatedly. It impresses the judge enough to give Genesis Blair the W. It was a split decision.
Now meet Errol Garnett at a hundred and nineteen pounds unleashing against Nelson Diaz who comes in with a four pound advantage which might have allowed him to weather this storm.
But the tides turns for Diaz in the third with this straight right and then he follows it up with a ferocious attack that leads to this decision with Referee Carr as Garnett, as Garnett conceded to Diaz with best fight of the day.
In the meantime George Hernandez is the recipient of this straight left that puts his seat on the mat in this four rounder featuring two hundred and fifty two pounds.
Hernandez does have his move in the second and he does step up to the task at hand.
The judges nevertheless conclude that Jermaine Pascascio picks up the W.
Now Belizeans, meet two of Henrelta Gills grandchildren. Harrison Smith and Arlen Escorpeta. I know you won?t believe they?re cousins and we?ll dare say this exchange inside the ring is for real in this exhibition match.
Indeed it?s a special occasion for Mrs. Gill, Belize?s first lady of boxing when she declares both her grandson winners and we say good show.
The good news continues people because Arlen Escarpeta, Henrelta?s grandson, is a movie star currently in the NBC series American Dream.
Arlen Escarpata, Belizean Actor
?In the States I an actor. I am working on a TV show right now called American Dreams. It comes on every Sunday at eight o?clock on NBC. We will come back January second for our third season. I play the character Sam Walker. The show takes place in the sixties and we have a lot of bandstand and things like Martin Luther King, Malcom X and all the big singers from the States like Alicia Keys, B2K, Usher and all those people come on my show and play singers from the sixties on our TV show.?
?I go to school in America but I was born right here in Belize so I am back to visit family. I got to box my cousin today and he gave be a good work out. As you can see, I am panting and breathing heavily because he gave me a good work out.?
Hey, nice meeting you Arlen and we wish you the best in the future and of course represent.
Now let?s head north to the Sandhill football field where the Belize Rural presented the final Game III in this year?s three game championship series. Both Pueblo Escondidio and Lucky Strike Eagles come in with a win apiece.
It?s Pueblo Escondido forcing the action from off the right side only to be turned away by the opposing goalkeeper.
Pueblo comes back to attack off this spot kick but despite back to back defensive mistakes by the Eagles the scoreboard remains unmoved.
At the other end Alvin Brown gets set by Tyrone Muschamp but the ball rises over the crossbar and at the half it?s a scoreless ballgame.
In second half Pueblo squanders this open look at goal and they still comes up empty in the scramble for possession afterwards.
This championship match had to go to overtime and that?s when Jack Dawson puts up this loose ball and snacks it into the goal to give Pueblo Escondido a 1-zip win and the 2004 Belize Rural Title. Sports Monday says congratulations.
In horse racing news, Sunday?s race at the Sylvestre Stadium in Burrel Boom saw International of Hoare?s Stables beat out Africa and Tsunami in the Baymen Cup six furlongs.
Kiss of Canton Stables held off Sundee?s Victorie and Kathleen Comin to take the Ladyville Shell seven furlongs. While answer the call of Hoare?s Stable prevailed in the Old Masters Breeders Cup and furlongs.
We say congratulations and now look forward to the Santiago Castillo Cup set for New Years Day at Burrel Boom.
That?s our show for today. We certainly invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
