6th Annual Habinahan Wanaragua Held in Dangriga
For years, there have been efforts to preserve all aspects of the Garifuna culture. In 2010, a trio of Garifuna activists, including Roy Cayetano, Canon Jerris Valentine and Cassian Nuñez, decided to initiate an annual competition as a way of motivating the formation of wanaragua camps and improving the quality of performance. This resulted in the retrieval of the knowledge and skills traditionally associated with wanaragua, even before the first Senior Habinahan Wanaragua Competition that was staged in January 2011. This year’s competition was held over the weekend in the Stann Creek District. Here’s a snippet from the sixth annual event.
