Mencias Gets 10 Years for Manslaughter
On December tenth, 2015, a jury of twelve deliberated for over five hours, found Rafael Mencias not guilty of murder but guilty of the manslaughter of Phillip Hall which occurred on July twenty-sixth, 2010. In mitigation, Judge Herbert Lord heard from five character witnesses who spoke well of Mencias asking the court for leniency on his behalf. His attorney, Baja Shoman of Legal Aid asked the court for remission time. Judge Herbert Lord today sentenced Mencias to ten years in jail less five years already served. It means Mencias will only have to serve half five more years behind bars. In the trial, it was revealed that Hall was stabbed fourteen times in his apartment in Carolina Village, Corozal District.
