Mayan Land Rights Commission Named
The Toledo Maya Land Rights Commission has been named. Before we get to the names, the scope of work of the Commission is the implementation of the Consent Order of the Caribbean Court of Justice, which requires Government to take measures to protect rights arising from Maya customary land tenure. The Commission will also establish a framework that will lead to collaborative consultation and participation of key stakeholders, from the twenty-three villages, including Conejo and Santa Cruz, the Maya Leaders Alliance, and the Toledo Alcalde Association. Attorney General and Minister for Legal Affairs, Vanessa Retreage, who is charged with responsibility for the Toledo Maya Land Rights Commission, has named former minister Lisel Alamilla – as Chair of the Commission and Noreen Fairweather from NEMO, as well as Randall Sheppard from the Attorney General’s Ministry as members. The AG has also contracted attorney Anthony Ross as expert Consultant to the Commission.
