John Briceño Calls for a Clean Campaign

John Briceño

On the political front…The battle for leader of the People’s United Party continues to heat up, in a most unpleasant way. It’s gotten so bad in social media that at the recent National Party Council, all three candidates signed a commitment that they would keep it clean and civil. Those signatures weren’t worth the paper they were written on, and the insults, taunts and very personal attacks continue unabated. Former P.U.P. leader John Briceño has been the main target in the sustained strike on Facebook, so we asked him for a comment when we got the chance.

John Briceño, Candidate for P.U.P. Leader

“You may find this shocking but I have not been looking at Facebook. But yes, I’ve been told about these nasty posts on FB. If you were to look at my Facebook, I think as far back as December fourteenth, we have been asking everyone to run a clean campaign…all the people that support me I have been asking to run a clean campaign. Let us win based on my merits and the hard work that I have done for the Party.”

Mike Rudon

“You have been in this campaign position before. You have been in a convention position before. You have been leader of the P.U.P. before. There were challenges back then, for example the ownership of the Belize Times and Positive Vibes. Have you been giving any thought to that?”

John Briceño

“With the spread of our access to the internet…the Belize Times and Vibes are important assets to the Party, but they are not as critical as they were back then. Yes, the present leader and even the Rt. Hon. Said Musa have said that whoever leads the party would have access to those assets and will be able to use them for the work of the Party. But what we are going to be doing is that we will be using the Internet. We’re going to get a social media specialist within the Party to have an active Facebook account, to have a website, to have a Twitter account, to have an Instagram account to put the Belize Times online so that everybody can have access to the Belize Times free of cost.”
