Police investigate Roaring Creek murder
Who would want to kill a disabled man? And why? Those are just two questions that Belmopan police are trying to answer as what appears to be a murder in Roaring Creek over the weekend has shocked residents of the village and outraged the victim’s family. Twenty-four year old Sherman Herrera, a resident of Teakettle, was found dead early on Sunday morning after authorities responded to an emergency 911 call. When his body was found on the side of the Western Highway in Roaring Creek, it was believed that Herrera, who is speech impaired, was the victim of a hit and run or had fallen from a moving vehicle. But investigating officer Sergeant Sinquest Martinez says the police have pieced together a sequence of events which indicates that Herrera’s death was not an accident.
Sgt. Sinquest Martinez, Investigating Officer
?Post mortem has revealed that this young man was murdered some time around Sunday morning in Roaring Creek Village. First it was being treated as a fatality, but it was not a fatality. Evidences are showing that he was murdered and we are dealing with it in that manner. We have some information and we are working towards it.?
Patrick Jones
?I understand the last time he was seen alive he was socializing in Roaring Creek.?
Sgt. Sinquest Martinez
?He was not socializing in Roaring Creek. Prior to his death, he was socializing in Belmopan with a friend.?
Patrick Jones
?Then what happened??
Sgt. Sinquest Martinez
?Just before this establishment was being closed, he and one of his friends went home. But Sherman Herrera lived in Teakettle Village and his friend lives in Roaring Creek. But due to his friend?s car not having enough gas–that is why–he was not taken home. So he was left on the Western Highway on the second bump in Roaring Creek Village and his friend went home.?
Patrick Jones
?Any idea as to what happened after that??
Sgt. Sinquest Martinez
?Well what happened after that is that he was murdered in Roaring Creek Village, but not at that spot. He was murdered in a different location, but we don?t want to divulge it at this moment because investigation continues at this present moment.?
Herrera was buried this afternoon in his home village of Teakettle. The police are asking anyone with information about the killing to call the nearest station or crime stoppers at 922.
