ST. Michaels advance to city hoops final

Good evening, I?m James Adderley with this brand new serving of Sports Monday. The Central Division Secondary Schools Basketball playoffs got off to a start Friday night at the Civic Centre where two arch rivals: the St. Michaels College and Wesley College battled it out to get into the male finals.

It?s Wesley College, the defending champion off to a great start as Wilfred Richards finds the streaking Travis Lennan who lays it off the glass for 2.

On this trip down court Loudrick Beeks gets this open look and he does knock down the short range jumper for two of his ten points total tonight.

It?s a 9-2 run for Wesley until number 9 Densmore Edwards moves his man out the way to launch a successful 2.

So momentum transfers to St. Michaels College who take a 6 point lead when Edwards pick up the easiest of his game high 27 points.

In the meantime this long range dial from Kareen Ferguson drops like a dagger against Wesley. And then Ferguson finds the very talented Densmore Edwards who hits nothing but cotton against the defence of Rashad Arnold and at the half St. Michaels boast a 12 point lead.

In the second half things begin to tighten up a whole lot–Loudrick Beeks goes for the long three, chases down the rebound and sneaks in for the easy 2 he would finish with 8 points for Wesley College.

This hook up between Beeks and Gresham Rodriguez produces a reverse lay up that?s good.

Of course we must agree, Wesley College cant seem to contain Densmore Edwards who makes it look easy.

Travis Lennan decides to step up to the challenge and here he strikes for 2 of his team high 22 points.

Down by 5 Wesley?s Wilfred Richards launches this individual effort that gives his team 3 points as he would also convert the free throw.

And it become a tied ballgame at 47 points apiece with Travis Lennan somehow converts this difficult basket.

However, St. Michaels gets the answer from Edwards. And then this hassle by Edwards gets the pill to Leroy Louriano who hits what would be the winning basket in the 53 ? 51 final score that sees St. Michaels College more on while Wesley makes an early exit in 2004.

?For the last three years I am here trying my best. I try hard to get this trophy and it looks like I?ll get it this year. In this game here we worked hard to do the best to make my team reach so far. I just try my best to gain some points.?

On the women?s side, St. Catehrine?s Academy brought out its famous cheerleading team and indeed they did not disappoint.

Also not disappointing is the basketball team which boasts a six point lead over ACC girls with 2-50 to the long whistle–they would hang on to the 23-21 victory to stay alive in the hunt for this year?s title.

On tonight?s ticket, Monday night, ACC faces St Johns College in a bid to make the Male finals, while the St. Michaels Girls go up against SCA for the title.

In other basketball news you remember Darwin Carter of Semi Pro basketball inside this beautiful jewel of ours. Well he is the first Belizean to play in the ABA League. Carter plays for the Los Angeles Stars who are currently in second place with a 3-1 record thanks to his 22 points per game which makes him the second leading scorer on the team.

We also want to salute Chaka Lightburn who helped Pace University to win three ballgames in a row for a 4 & 2 record. He came up with eleven points against American International College in an 80 ? 65 final score for Pace University.

Turning to the cycling scene, Kevin?s Barber Shop presented another non-elite twenty mile race over the weekend and yes, the dozen riders are off.

At mile six Michael Henry aka Yellow step up to take the station at mile six. At Almond Hill Jason Gibson takes over the pace.

Yellow Henry re-surges to grab the station at mile ten.

In the meantime Darrel Reyes makes his presence felt when he steps up to take Almond Hill prize on the return trip.

At six miles, Deon Ottley gets his move into the record books with this station prize.

So we move to the finish and the big W goes to Darrel Reyes, Stanley Sanders settles for second, Bert Sabido pulls up third, Michael Henry rides in fourth, and Jerome Gibson fifth and our man Chris Mangar takes full command as sixth place.

That?s it for now. We invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
