PM Barrow Says No Comment on P.U.P. Leadership Squabble

Dean Barrow

The People’s United Party will elect its new leader on January thirty-first in Belmopan. The race is getting tighter as Francis Fonseca, John Briceño and Cordel Hyde zero in on the delegates in the last stretch of the three-man race. All three have expressed confidence, but only one will emerge as the new party leader. While in Guatemala City, we asked PM Barrow for his views on the leadership fight of the Opposition. This is what he said.

Prime Minister Dean Barrow

“That’s such an intensely internal matter that I won’t venture to offer any opinions. Were you surprised when the past party leader re-entered the race? I was. My surprise does not necessarily imply a criticism. He says that the people approached him and if there was indeed a big ground swell asking for him to return then one would have to understand. I have criticism to make of any of the three candidates. They are part of our democracy a central part of our democracy. For god sakes, they’re political party dominated the country for years and years and years and one should want to see them return to a state of good political health.”
