…while lesser violence continues

A stabbing incident in the old capital has left a man in the hospital in critical condition. Nineteen-year-old Elmer Caliz told police that he was attacked by a man he recognized while he stood near the Novelo’s Bus Terminal. According to Caliz, the assailant pulled a knife, a scuffle ensued and Caliz wound up with a blade in his side. A suspect has been detained for questioning.

Meanwhile, up the road in Mahogany Heights, a resident was shot in the hip after he attacked a policeman. According to the official police report, thirty-one year old Calbert Westby was wounded by constable Alexander Salam after Westby tried to take away his service revolver. According to Salam, the gun went off accidentally as the two struggled. Salam had been called from his post by Westby’s common-law-wife, Jamie Williams, who reported that she and Westby were having problems and she feared that he would harm her. Westby remains hospitalized in stable condition at the KHMH, while the Police Department completes its investigation.

And in a final and not-too-encouraging piece of crime news, a twelve year old Belizean boy has been detained for possession of a handgun. The child was stopped by a police mobile patrol after one on Monday morning. He was exiting Simmons Alley off Albert Street and when he saw the cops, he allegedly dropped an object he was carrying and ran away. He was caught and upon returning to the area, police found that the object in question was a chrome-plated nine millimetre pistol loaded with six bullets. The youth is expected to be arraigned on firearm violations.
