Unions repeat call for GOB reforms
On Wednesday the Chamber of Commerce and National Trade Union Congress of Belize issued a press release challenging Government to institute a list of ten reforms or face the prospect of citizens refusing to pay new taxes expected to be imposed in the new year. Today N.T.U.C.B. general secretary George Frazer, elaborated.
George Frazer, General Secretary, NUTCB
?I would not term it as radical. I would term it as being up front. We are facing very serious times. All the indicators, economic and otherwise and the reality out there is that things are serious. We are on the brink of collapse if we don?t take the necessary measures now. People are hurting. So many people are losing their jobs. We have seen recently what has happened and many of them because of some of these misguided policies and games that are being played. ?
Stewart Krohn
?Bottom line Mr. Frazer, you?ve listed ten things that Government must do that if they don?t do, you are going to tell your people and the chamber is going to tell its people not to pay any new taxes. You stand by this statement??
George Frazer
?We stand by it. Our unions, the eight unions are prepared to defend what is happening.?
In a statement relayed through his press secretary, Prime Minister Said Musa said that he had not yet received the letter from the chamber and unions but that most of the requested reforms have been under continuous review by Cabinet. It is understood that the Unions and Chamber are scheduled to meet with the Technical Financial team on Monday, while the National Economic Council will hold its scheduled meeting on Wednesday.
