Separate shooting incidents leave 3 injured

Story Picture
Separate drive-by shootings in Belize City over the weekend have sent two people to hospital. According to police, the first occurred on Friday night. Twenty-six year old Darren Gillett told police that he was standing at the corner of Lakeview and Logwood Streets when a grey car drove up to him. Seconds later someone from inside the vehicle produced a gun and starting pulling the trigger. Fortunately, Gillett survived the hail of gunshots as only one of the bullets hit him just below the knee. Gillett is in stable condition at the KHMH. Police tell News 5 that when the occupants of the car are in custody, they will face charges in connection with the shooting and will also be charged for theft as the get away car, which was later found abandoned near the government complex on Mahogany Street, had been reported stolen earlier in the evening from an area near the BTL Park on Newtown Barracks. The second incident happened last night on Coney Drive. Iona Jones of Antelope Street, told police that she was attending a house party when a white car drove slowly by. Jones says gunshots rang from an open window and one of the bullets grazed her right shoulder. Jones was treated for her injuries at the KHMH and has since been released. As police continue their investigations, the department is urging eyewitnesses to volunteer any information that might help solve this case.

Belize City police are still not sure what triggered an early Saturday morning shooting, but by the time the dust settled the intended target had escaped without injuries but bystander was seriously wounded. According to authorities Kent Dobson of a Rocky Road and East Canal address told them that around seven thirty that morning he saw a young man he recognized as Mark Medina. It is not clear if the men exchanged words, but Dobson has reported to police that Medina pulled out a firearm and fired several shots at him. Dobson says he managed to run away without any of the bullets hitting him. However, twenty-year-old Deon Ferguson, who was in the area, fell to the ground when one of the bullets hit him in the groin. Ferguson was rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he remains in a serious condition. Medina was later arrested and charged with aggravated assault and grievous harm.
