Stabbing victim tells of assault

A Belize City man lies hospitalized tonight, recovering from stab wounds he suffered in an incident that occurred on Wednesday evening. News 5’s Jacqueline Woods got the victim’s side of the story from his bedside at the KHMH.

?He stab me like out off ear like he want to kill me because he stabbed me in my neck right in front of his people. I don?t know why they couldn?t take away the knife from him.?

Twenty-four year old John Tillett lies in the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital with a stab wound to his neck. Tillett says he was attacked by a man he identified as Juan Duran, an ex-police officer. According to Tillett, Duran started to break things inside his father?s house following an argument he had with his live in girlfriend, who is Tillett?s cousin.

?She the tell Juan Duran she don?t want to have nothing else to do with him and just come out of the house. She said take everything weh dah fi you and come out of the house. Then he started breaking down the house, which belongs to my pa. I tell him not to do that cause he wah make me get the next way. And I don?t know if he was under the influence or what. My cousin said she see he mi di drink and that?s why she gone on so because she wanted him to go back with his friends to drink. So I tell him to carry the things cross to your ma because his ma lives right across in the next yard and before he carry the things cross, he started breaking up my cousin?s things and my pa house. I got angry and I tell him before you play like you bad, better me and you fight. So I gone cross the yard, but I never know he had a knife on him because all of his people were out there. So, when I gone out there and when I fire a punch after him, he stabbed me. I not even know he had a knife. Then when he done stab me, I grabbed he round his neck and he dropped the knife. Then his little sister and brother grabbed me under my neck. I never know I get stabbed yet. It was not until when they grab me and try fi pull me away to let go their brother, I see blood di spray and that is when I conscious I get stabbed.?

Tillett was taken to the KHMH and is scheduled to undergo surgery on Friday. Police have since detained Duran but so far no charges have been brought against him. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.

Tillett says the police have informed him that he might be charged with wounding since Duran claims he cut his hand, but Tillett says that Duran was the only person holding a weapon. He says authorities have also told him that his cousin may also be charged with assault and grievous harm.
