Douglas Lamb wins weekend cycling

Good evening, I?m James Adderley with this big blast we call Sports Monday. So we?ll roll out immediately to the Northern Highway for the start of this sixty-mile road race as presented by the Belize Cycling Association Saturday morning.

Indeed, it is a crowded start with over forty-five athletes in the hunt for glory today, including the elite of the elites.

At the Boom cut off, Froggy Leslie is intent on executing the big breakaway, but the pelathon stays en masse within striking distance.

However, Leslie is intent on running and remains the lead figure on his mean machine on the Northern Highway.

That is until he gets reeled in around mile twenty by furious chase group led by Ernest Meighan and Douglas Lamb.

Nevertheless, at the turn around point at Gerald Garbutt?s farm, Leslie is the first to complete the turn–but he certainly has attracted a lot of company by now; some twenty riders to be exact.

Through the Boom Road this group of six which includes, Lamb, Meighan, Fresh Fred Usher, Ian Smith and Mateo Cruz are pushing the pace.

Around the Prisons, Douglas Lamb decides to go in ahead and he reaches for a higher gear.

Fact is people there is no challenger for Barcelona Lamb today and here he is jetting out of Hattieville with the chase still on his trail.

And yes, Douglas Lamb you?re a wicked straight shooter today and we say congrats on the big W.

In the meantime, Fresh Fred Usher cruises in to take second place as his Santino teammate Ernest Meighan takes third for the Santino top three sweep.

Nevertheless two arch rivals battle for fourth place and we?ve watched this tape a number of times to safely conclude that Ian Smith of Guinness Smiling edges out Mateo Cruz of Santino by a hair breaths. We say good show to the cycling community.

Now let?s check in on the non-elite thirty miles Chelsea?s Birthday Classic presented on the Western Highway, Sunday afternoon by Odell?s Juniors mechanic shop and believe me people these three riders are intent on tracking down Kenroy Gladden.

But the Lionman champion knows that he is the man in this event as he continues to streak home uncontested.

And here he is Kenroy Smoke Wadden grabbing top honours in an easy fashion. And even has time to pose for the cameras before the chase group arrives.

Don?t get confused folks the man in the middle is Miguel Leal and he?s our second place finisher. Next comes Papa Gacho Ellis Meighan, King finishes fourth, Mark Leal takes fifth while our Channel 5 colleague rolls in to take sixth place.

Turning to the football scene, we take you to the MCC Grounds where the long awaited Game II of the Belize District Female Football Championship should finally be staged.

However, at the whistle there?s only the Millennium Girls, who boast a one game lead in the two game series for the 2004 title.

Folks this is the second time this match has fallen apart so we tried to get a view from the Kulture Yabra Girls who are refusing to suit up today.

Kulture Yabra Girls

?The first week when we were to continue this game, it was raining. But you know, rain or shine we ready. He came and drove by and told us that he wasn?t going to play because he knows that his teammates will not show up in the rain. Now the following week we were to play and we showed up out here and he?s not here. He says he went to the States and we must understand his situation. Then now here is the third game and this is what they come with now that they will play a game then we will to penalty. We are not with that. We are not Phillips and his things them. He needs to learn to explain his things properly and be a man to his words because we are not with him. And we don?t need trophy. We don?t eat trophy either, but we just play game right because we are footballers. We understand it?s for the love of the sports, but we are not trying to have anyone to run over us just for a trophy.?

Anthony Phillips, Coach, Millennium Girls

?As far as I know, we won the first game two to one and they need to come back and beat us now. If they beat us, now the series will tie up and then we will have to go in penalty. That?s just the way the series goes. So if they don?t show up right now, we will win the ballgame because we are here. We?ll see what will happen today because somehow he misleads his team. I am playing by the rules.?

Speaking of the rules, here is the copy of the document agreed to by both parties before going in–and it does spell out a two game series for the title, which could be settled by a golden gold.

However, people while the Millennium Girls are warming up on the pitch, the Kulture Yabra Girls are abandoning the scene.

Folks, we can?t say for certain who agreed to what or when this matter will be settled–but we can tell you this team of officials were as bewildered as the fans at the Barracks yesterday.

Hey, that?s it for now; we thank our cameraman for the great work over the weekend. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
