Shootings injure two on Southside

Story Picture
Investigations continue tonight into a series of shootings in the area of Kraal Road that have left two people recovering from gunshot wounds. According to police, the first call reporting gunfire came in at seven Wednesday night at a snack shop. No one was injured but officers noted that the glass door on a refrigerator was shattered and two bullets cracked the cement on the outer front wall of the building. But within minutes, the police received reports of more gunfire near Faber’s Road and Kraal Road. Cops say twenty-one year old Anthony Parks told them he was riding his bicycle when he heard a single shot and felt a sharp pain in his left leg. Parks maintained he did not see the shooter. He was taken to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he has been admitted to ward in a stable condition. Just over an hour later, another cyclist was caught in the line of fire, this time on Euphrates Avenue. According to twenty-one year old Hassan Valerio, around eight thirty he was riding near St. Ignatius School when he heard the blast of a gun and realized he had been hit in the left arm. Like Parks, Valerio has informed authorities that he did not see who shot him. He was transferred to the KHMH but we understand self discharged earlier today. Thirty minutes after Valerio?s troubles the sound of bullets once again punctured the night air, scaring twenty-four year old Sicily Trapp and her four children. Trapp says she was in bed watching television around nine o’clock when she heard the rapid report of five gunshots, the last of which pierced the plywood wall of her bedroom. No one was injured and Trapp maintains she can’t think why anyone would want to hurt her. Police press officer G. Michael Reid says the department is investigating these incidents from all angles, but the public’s cooperation has been disappointing.

?In incidents like these that seem to involve certain types of people, they are not ready to cooperate with the police as such in that they are either afraid or that they are either looking for their own personal retaliation and this is what is most concerning to us. Because whenever these shootings occur, there is always a possibility that innocent people are going to get hurt.?

“The flow information programme is still in effect and there is still an award available for people who give information about illegal firearms and about crime on a whole. So please–this is our city–it is our responsibility to do what we can so that the streets are safe for our children and for the elderly to walk.?

News 5 understands that police are treating these incidents as four separate cases.
