Court of Appeal Upholds Manslaughter Conviction
The Court of Appeal has dismissed the case of Rosalia Castillo who was found not guilty of the stabbing death of Carla Perez in December 2010 and sentenced to twelve years in prison. On the night of the fatal stabbing, Castillo and Perez were reportedly at an establishment in Cayo when a young man made advances on Perez. In a jealous rage, Castillo attacked Perez and inflicted a single stab wound to her neck. On Monday, at a special sitting of the appellate court, Castillo’s sentence was upheld, following arguments by attorney Anthony Sylvester. Castillo’s Supreme Court trial was in Belmopan in and concluded on January fourth, 2015 in the chamber of Justice Antoinette Moore. The matter was dealt with as a trial without jury. Castillo continues her twelve year sentence at the Belize Central Prison.
