Vega Maintains That He is Giving Up Politics for Family
Deputy Party Leader Gaspar Vega tendered his letter of resignation to the United Democratic Party Secretariat on March eighth, informing that he will not be contesting his seat in Orange Walk North for a fourth time. The unexpected decision came as a bombshell, just a few weeks ahead of the U.D.P.’s endorsement convention which was held later that month. In the wake of the announcement, much has been said about the reason behind Vega’s retirement. The three-peat politician, however, maintains that he is stepping away from electoral politics for the sake of his family. He reiterated that point earlier today when interviewed by the media.
Gaspar Vega, Deputy Party Leader, U.D.P.
“A lot of people are concerned, wanting to know why and what were the reasons. I’ve been honest with all of them. I knew from the very beginning that I would not be there forever. It was some sacrifices that I did, especially like I always say, with my family time that I have cheated my family from. But I am very grateful and will forever be grateful to the people of my constituency who gave me that opportunity. It’s not a dream or a plan that I had to be a politician, it just happened because of the level of corruption that was being practiced in 2006 and 2007 and that was what got me into it. I think I have done my best and I have given my all to my people. The people in my constituency are concerned about the next leader. I will be working with them with every energy I have to ensure that we get the best possible leader for that division.”
