BZ. Rural teams compete for Jex Cup
James Adderley, Reporting
Good evening, I?m James Adderley with a fresh delivery of Sports Monday. Yesterday we travelled to the Sandhill Field in an effort to play catch up with the Second Annual Reginald Jex Challenge Cup.
We arrive in the second half of a Week II match featuring Lucky Strike Eagles in action against Press On as Frederick Garbutt gets this breakaway in front of the goal only to embarrass himself.
The Eagles nevertheless come right back with nice ball work on the next press only to see the shot from Alvin Brown inch outside the sticks.
But if you think those were big misses for the Lucky Strike team then watch Mark Zuniga does everything right except the right think–getting the pill to the net–and we say to the Press on keeper Giovanni Martinez?you?re in luck today.
Just when we were about to give up on a Press On highlight, Andre Alvarado beats the Eagles defence only to squander a golden opportunity.
Again its Press On pressing and indeed Nicoli Alvarado should have done better with this open look at goal.
At the other end, the Eagles get good play going to the goal, but at the end they miss the shot from point-blank range and were ruled to be offside.
Folks it?s another easy scoring opportunity for Mark Zuniga, but this striker certainly should have called in sick today.
So Press On tries to counter and could have moved the scoreboard right here except Andre Alvarado shoots directly to the goalkeeper.
How hard is a goal to come by-well after looking at this sequence you decide for yourself.
In the end, the goal comes when Alberto Chacon pushes the pill past a beaten Martinez to give the Lucky Strike Eagles a 1-zip big W.
In Game II of the double header Mashal Hardcore comes out against Caribe International and look get on the scoreboard in the first half off this set piece but are denied.
It looks to be a one-sided affair as Jerome Madril fires this left foot that forces Daniel Dougal into a save.
At the other end Caribe International gets a run at goal, but Edward Torres can?t catch up with the pill and at the half we have a scoreless game.
In second half the Maskall Hardcore take over. Floyd Jones outruns the defence and beats the keeper with a left foot push to give his team a 1-zip lead.
This time down field Leon Smith fires out the goal but it turns out to be a high riser.
Make it three strikes for Mark Zuniga who does possess but obviously lack finish?and even his fans are upset.
Goal number two comes when Nigel Hulse finds himself at the right time at the right place.
And then Elroy Hulse steps up with this move to force the 3-zip regulation big W for the Maskall team.
Sundays schedule finds untouchables in action against Maskall Hardcore. Pueblo Escondido forces Press On, while the Eagles will go up against Maskall Spanish Town.
In other football news, Thursday night at San Salvador, Kulture Yabra of Belize plays Game II of its home and away series with Allianza of El Salvador after struggling to a scoreless draw at the MCC Grounds.
Meanwhile Buca of Punta Gorda faces Olympic of Honduras Tuesday to complete play in the first round of this years CONCACAF Championship. Boca lost 1-zip in Game II. We wish both Belizean ball clubs maximum success.
In Track & Field news, we want to salute the Belizean Track & Field Athletes who medalled at the Cadica Senior?s open over the weekend in Manaque Nicaragua.
Tricia Flores took the one hundred metres in 12:40 seconds to capture gold and then she posted 5:36 metres in the long jump to grab her second gold.
Kay De Vaughan recorded a personal best of 1:70 metres in the High Jump to set a new Belizean record and win gold. While Kaina Arzu finished second in the one hundred metres with a time of 12:59 to bring home silver. Sports Monday takes this opportunity to send heartfelt congratulation to one and all.
Hey folks, that?s our show for today. We certainly invite you back same time, same place, next week. Jah over all, I?m James Adderley.
