Meet & Greet Backa Martins

Chester Williams

The weekly meet and greet exercise conducted by Belize City police was concentrated in the Saint Martin’s area this afternoon where officers of varying ranks descended on the streets of that neighborhood.  While the men and women of law enforcement made their rounds, they were being commended on the implementation of a recent curfew for minors.  News Five spoke with top cop Chester Williams about the progress of the meet and great session.

ACP Chester Williams, Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“We started this meet and greet in July of last year where every week we come out and meet the public on Wednesdays or Thursdays, but more so on Wednesdays. And the usual is to hear from them, to get their views as to the work the police is doing in the area and basically to get recommendations or advice from the people in the different areas and it is working for us. We continue to get good reviews from residents in the areas that we have been visiting. And I must say on this meet and greet as well as the one last week, one of the questions we would ask the parents is whether or not they are in support of the curfew.  And I will tell you that between last week and this week, we had not come across any parent who is against the curfew. They all endorsed it and said that they believe that it is the right thing to do to keep minors off the streets between the hours we had specified, but some of them were saying that they would have wanted it from eight o’clock, others say from six o’clock. So we see where people are in full support of the curfew initiative and it is something that we have commenced and we will continue to do. After all, it is the laws that are on the books and we will continue to enforce the law.”
