Correction: 7 suspects charged in bank job
In a story, we ran in yesterday’s newscast we incorrectly reported that no suspects were ever apprehended in the robbery of the Belize Bank branch in Orange Walk in March. In fact seven people are currently before the Orange Walk magistrate’s court, accused of holding up the bank. About a week after the March second botched heist Israel Carpio, Douglas Jimenez, Carlos Campos, Juan Rivas, Jose Henriquez, Benjamin Orellano and Rafael Campos, were arrested in a police dragnet that covered Benque Viejo, Corozal and Caye Caulker. All seven are charged with robbery and aggravated assault. The accused bank robbers were also charged with two counts of unlawful imprisonment of Bank Manager Efrain Martin and his assistant Lucy Cervantes. Court documents at the start of the trial put the amount of money stolen in the robbery at fifty-one thousand, four hundred and forty-six dollars and forty-two cents. At that time only twenty thousand, one hundred and thirty-eight dollars had been recovered.
