Police Investigate String of Shootings in the Old Capital

Earlier we told you about murders in Dangriga, Belize City and Caye Caulker. But there was a string of shootings, in particular in the city, where two men were injured and hospitalized. One was shot on Vernon Street while he was purchasing food at a shop across from the Berger Field. The other shooting was several blocks away on Glenn Street near George Street territory. Police are satisfied that they are not related.

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson, Dep. Regional Commander, Eastern Division South

“Justin Belgrave, twenty-seven year old who was at a shop on Vernon Street and he heard shots fired. He ran and he later realized that he was shot to his groin, genital area.”

Reporter

“At what time was that?”

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson

“That was after nine.”

Reporter

“Was that a retaliation for the murder in Dangriga?”

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson

“That…again, like I said, none of these shootings; that we have anything concrete to link to the shooting or retaliation from the incident in Dangriga. We had the shooting of a young man Venaro Taka, a twenty-four year old Belizean. He was riding his bicycle on Glenn Street heading towards Euphrates Avenue when he heard a shot fired and a young man was riding behind him in the same direction. After the shot was fired, he realized that three of the shots caught him; one to his arm and two to his knees.”

Reporter

“So all these persons are in the K.H.M.H.?”

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson

“I believe by now that one of them has been released while the other remains in the hospital.”

Duane Moody

“Sir what could have attributed to this? You are saying that the investigation is not saying that it is linked to the murder that occurred in Dangriga, but they are just random incidents?”

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson

“Like I said, we don’t have anything concrete to say it is. Maybe it is and maybe it is not. I don’t know, but we are looking in that direction.”

Duane Moody

“Are any of them gang-related?”

Sr. Supt. Alden Dawson

“Not that we have at this time; neither of the three.”
