Students discuss meaning of Independence

On Tuesday it will be twenty-three years since Belize gained her Independence. The day is usually marked with an officially ceremony, parade and then all day festivity at the BTL Park on Newtown Barracks. On that day, it is not certain just how many Belizeans think about the importance of the occasion and just how far has the country has come as an independent nation. It is one question that primary school students at St. Mary’s answered today through a number of presentations. Teacher Rita Mejia told News 5 about her school’s National Historical Heritage Day.

Rita Mejia, Teacher

?We noticed that most of the young Belizean people are not really familiar with their national heritage. So this year we reminded them of what commemorated or what took place for the Battle of St. George?s Caye, which was the tenth of September and events that leads up to the twenty-first of September. So we decided to have a spiral curriculum done at different stages just to make it lively for them and to make them have a better idea in order for them to appreciate what they saw and what they will see later on.?

Students from the Infant Division to Standard Six had presentations.
