Does N.T.U.C.B. Support BTV Sarstoon Voyage?

Mora also weighed in on the seemingly hasty release issued by the Organization of American States following the deadly shooting.  While the N.T.U.C.B. has taken notice of the O.A.S. apparent knee-jerk reaction, it finds itself in somewhat of a pickle where the Belize Territorial Volunteers are concerned.  That proverbial catch twenty-two prohibits the umbrella organization from dissuading Belizeans wanting to venture into the Sarstoon area.  Likewise, the N.T.U.C.B. is also not in a position to encourage travel into the area in question.

Marvin Mora, President, N.T.U.C.B.

“In essence the whole headline of that particular release was basically putting Belize against the wall and condemning the forces of this country as if they have acted out of protocol or out of the way that they should in the performance of their duties, but without actually having the benefit of an investigation being concluded first.  And that’s one of the things that the N.T.U.C.B. noted, that the O.A.S. is already stepping ahead of the game and making pronunciations like that which would not really sit well in trying to be a neutral party between Belize and Guatemala regarding this territorial claim.”

“Sir, what do you make of the government’s pronouncement yesterday, specifically the prime minister’s directive to the Belize Territorial Volunteers not to go to the Sarstoon on Saturday to commemorate the signing of the border treaty between Great Britain and Guatemala?  The 1859 Treaty.”

Marvin Mora

“In a sense we have to be very responsible here, right.  Everybody has responsibility for their own self and people who are going there, we are hoping that they are adults and that they: one, realize that it could be dangerous.  Two: but they also, we know the reason why they are going there is because they want to exercise their right to go to whatever part of their country they’re entitled to.  I believe, and I also resonate the N.T.U.C.B.’s position, that we cannot tell people to go or not to go.  But we also believe that the government has the responsibility to ensure their safety.”
