Arson or accident? Libertad Police Station burns
Accident? Or Arson? That’s what police and fire officials are trying to figure out after the Libertad police station, which also housed the officer’s residence, went up in smoke on Monday night. According to police press officer G. Michael Reid, an inebriated resident of the village who was detained following a domestic dispute, was placed in the holding cell. Around ten fifteen, the detainee reported seeing sparks in the ceiling, which fell unto some paint that was being stored in the cell. When the paint ignited, police say the detainee yelled for help but by the time he was safely removed, the flames had spread and soon engulfed the entire building. Both the police and fire departments are investigating the source of the blaze. While the building, including the officer’s personal belongings, was a total loss, we are told that the outpouring of support from the villagers of Libertad has been gratifying. The village council has launched a public appeal for donations to assist the policeman and villagers have assured the police department that they are prepared to assist in any way, not only to provide temporary assistance to the officer, but also to rebuild the police station. If you would like to contribute to the Libertad fundraising effort, you can contact the principals of any of the schools in the village or call 423-0150 or 602-1212.
