P.U.P. Decries GOB’s Sarstoon Regulations

Maheia isn’t the only one disappointed by the new law. The P.U.P. has been engaged in the Guatemala discussion, and committed to a bi-partisan approach to resolution, but today the party came out swinging. Representatives declined comment, but the release makes it clear that the new law under the Public Safety Act is considered retrograde and highly prejudicial. In five points, the P.U.P. states that “this regulation with the specific objective of preventing Belizeans from entering Belize’s portion of the Sarstoon may be viewed in law as acquiescence by Belize to Guatemala’s assertion of sovereignty over the entire Sarstoon.” The P.U.P. also claims that the regulation serves to embolden Guatemala, and it is “an act of cowardice by the government to threaten to arrest and fine patriotic Belizeans who wish to exercise their constitutional right to move freely and peacefully in Belizean waters when Guatemalans illegally pour over our Western border every day.” In closing, the P.U.P. calls on the government to one – declare whether the equally and impartially enforced against Guatemalans who enter Belize’s portion of the Sarstoon and two – immediately rescind the unpatriotic Regulation. Like we said, officials of the P.U.P. declined to comment today, stating that the release speaks for itself
