Teachers Prepare for B.N.T.U. March

The Belize National Teachers Union is tonight making final preparations for a march to be held this Friday in the Old Capital. The B.N.T.U., which is the most militant of the unions, has embarked on a campaign called Stand Up for Belize, which kicked off in Benque Viejo Del Carmen in mid-April. The B.N.T.U. also wants the Sarstoon Law to be rescinded because it infringes on the free movement of Belizeans within our own territory.  And so on Friday, instead of taking a trip for Teachers’ Day, they will come out in large numbers. But there is a memo in circulation that we have confirmed was not released by the Ministry of Education. According to B.N.T.U. national president Luke Palacio, the memo begins by addressing teachers, but ends off speaking to public officers. Palacio met earlier today with the C.E.O.s of the Ministries of Education and Public Service and that memo never came up in discussion. And as far as he is concerned, all systems are go for the march.
