Sagitun is new Regent Cup Champ
James Adderley, Reporting
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and here?s the latest version of Sports Monday. The quest for the Regent?s Insurance Cup titled boiled down to a decisive Game III that brought Sagitun of Independence and Juventus of Orange Walk to the MCC Grounds yesterday. Also in town was Otto Mejia flown in from Guatemala by the BPFL to officiate this final match after many complaints about officiating from both sides of the equation has resurfaced
So, we go to action on the field. The boys from the North almost move the scoreboard some six minutes in with this set piece featuring firepower from Oliver Hendricks, but Darren Hinds somehow manages to handle things.
The South answers with this right foot push from Mark Kelo Leslie that presents problems for goalkeeper Japhet Young, but he recovers to solve them.
Now, keep your eyes on this centre from David Torres–Wilmer Garcia heads it to Marcos Souto and the Brazilian gives Sagitun a 1-zip lead eighteen minutes into the ballgame.
At the other end, this centre from Donnie Tun presents Juventus with a scoring chance, but Hinds intervenes.
It?s more Juventus with the Hendricks to Hendricks hook up, but Christopher doesn?t get enough on the ball to make it count.
Today, we must conclude Rubriel El Matador Mendez left home without his killer instincts after this bad first touch.
Juventus gets another chance to score off this spot kick, but the forward players can?t weave the intangibles to tie the ballgame and at the half it?s still a 1-nil Sagitun lead.
Meanwhile, folks Oliver Hendricks gets this open look from point blank range only to see Darren Hinds dismisses his effort.
The Sugar City gang then tries to move the scoreboard off this spot kick from Roberto Da Silver, but it?s just a bit too high.
Give Darren Hinds maximum respect for this save as he rejects Kevin Pelayo?s bid for the equalizer. Pelayo then gets a second chance to shake the net when he gets fed by Cheesy Burns, but again he comes up empty.
Folks, this spot kick by Sagitun leads to a wicked deflection by Wilmer Garcia–the rebound is fired back out goal, but the launch does miss the target.
In second half play, we must say neither team did enough to score a goal which was all right with Sagitun from down south, who with the 1-nil victory capture their third semi-pro football title and we certainly say congratulations.
Robert Muschamp, Sagitun
?Sagitun?s sixth season and third championship; what more can I ask for? I can retire right now and feel good about it. But that?s just us–when it?s time to work hard, when our back is against the wall that?s when Sagitun seems to turn up the momentum a little bit.?
James Adderley
?Were you satisfied with your team today??
Robert Muschamp, Sagitun
?Well, to somewhat no because especially in the second half when we went defensive, I saw a lot of my players kind of slacking up. I guess it?s from the lick; it?s like you want to catch cramp and different things and I know we are in good physical shape. I don?t know what will happen to them. But all we had to do was to concentrate on good defence; not allow them to score and just hold off the 1-nil and it worked out for us.?
Daniel Thomas, Juventus
?This is football; this is the game. You know the ball is round; definitely this is how it came out. I mean Sagitun is a championship team. Juventus always there trying hard and thing. We did very good; there is no doubt. Juventus, a lot of support we have; the fans and everything, but with the team, we did very good and came very far. Too bad, it?s too far to drown. ?>
James Adderley
?Yeah, but what was the problem today from your vantage-point??
Daniel Thomas, Juventus
?I believe I should have started the game. Because with me, Oliver, and Christopher in the head, it?s hard to whole anyone of us and the rebound and the opportunity we got in the first half, definitely we could have come up with a goal or something in this game.?
James Adderley
?Were you worried at anytime in today?s ballgame? It was a do or die ballgame and anything could have happened.?
Tony Zabaneh, Manager, Sagitun
?Especially in the second half; they pressured the whole half and it was for them to really capitalize and could have won. It was all in their favour. We defended, and defended, and defended. I was more than surprise at some of the goals that did not go in on Hinds and I give my today MVP to Darren Hinds, our goalkeeper. ?
?After seeing today?s game, seeing the quality of refereeing that we got, even though it was in both our favours. None of us knew them, none of us none the referee and I think that has brought the level of football in every respect, to a different standard. I know from here on, the referees that watched the game today will respect players on the field, likewise, player will respect referees.?
Now let?s head to the City Centre for Friday night?s BBA showdown between undefeated BTL Nets and their biggest challenger Kruzzaz. But today the Nets have Kenroy Smith in uniform just on the stage as he opens things up with this monster three pointer.
Hey guys it?s no flukes, Kenroy Smith strikes for another three point as Kruzzaz begin to pull ahead. The Nets respond with nice feed from Keith Acosta to AC Augustine who gets the easy two off the glass.
On the Nets possession, AC displays his long-range jumper with this three pointer to put his team up by four points.
Meanwhile Richard Toyer who would finish with the game high thirty-seven points, goes on a rampage from the three point line in this one and here he is hitting one of his sixth, three point shots.
And here is another one of his long-distance deliveries against BTL and at the half, the Kruzzazs are up by three points.
In the third, quarter this attempt at rebound sees Kirk Shabba Smith get hit in the face by Ernest Broaster. It?s a deep gash under the left eye, but Shabba would return to the fray.
Folks we?re tied at seventy-four points a piece in the fourth quarter with time running out. BTL can win the ballgame right here, but AC Augustine misses the shot so we?re into overtime.
It?s late into overtime when Richard Troyer and Kevin Seroki play the two man game to give the Kruzzaz a four point lead.
Key play in this ballgame comes when Darwin Leslie escapes or thinks he has, only to see Kirk Smith rise up and reject him as the Kruzzaz maintains a two point lead and go on to win eighty-two to seventy-nine–handing the Nets their first season loss.
In Cricket news, the long awaited championship series between Excellence of Double Head Cabbage and Wicked 11 of Flowers Bank for the Harrison Parks National Cricket title finally got underway on Saturday at Double Head. Wicked 11 batted first, got twenty-three runs from Winston Flowers. Meanwhile Darren Rhaburn, he struck for six wickets as the Wicked Ones totals a hundred and twenty-four runs for all out and they batted first.
In their turn at bat, the Double Head team could only must a forty-six runs, which is certainly surprising?and this in front of the house fans. Jason Broaster was the bright spot for Double Head with ten runs batted in. Game II now moves to Flowers Bank this Saturday and Excellence must win to force a decisive Game III.
So look out, there is a lot more sports coming. That?s it for now though. We thank our cameramen for their great work over the weekend. Jah over all, I?m James Adderly.
