PC under investigation for shooting homeless man

A Belize City police officer is under investigation tonight following a shooting incident on Tuesday. Reports are that police constable Geovanni Denis was on duty around nine that night at the Queen Street Police Station, when he approached a man sitting in the pan of a parked truck in the vicinity of the station. Denis says he asked the man what was doing there, but then without warning, the civilian picked up a broken cement block and threw it at the officer. Attempts were then made to subdue and detain the officer?s attacker, but during the melee, the man grabbed a large stone, with the apparent intention of hitting PC Denis with the object. The PC says at this point he pulled out his service revolver and instructed his attacker to drop the stone. When the man didn?t, Denis pulled the trigger: the shot hit the stone thrower in his wrist. That man has since been identified as thirty-year-old Norman Bernard. Bernard was treated for his injuries and we understand will undergo a psychiatrist evaluation. Police sources tell News 5 Bernard is homeless. Up to news time, no charges had been levied against Police Constable Denis.
