Sagitun falls to Juventus in Regent’s Cup finals

Story Picture
Good evening, I?m James Adderley and we?re back with this fresh delivery of Sports Monday. The Regent?s Insurance Cup Championship Series took off Saturday Night inside the Michael Ashcroft Stadium, as Sagitun hosted Juventus of Orange Walk.

On hand, to kick off the three game title series is none other than the Prime Minister of Belize, Honourable Said Musa, who certainly was instrumental in breaking the impasse between the F.F.B. and the B.P.F.L. earlier this year.

But football takes centre stage today and we?re only seven minutes in when this corner kick is poorly cleared by Sagitun defence–Celij sends it back and Christopher Hendericks beats Darren Hinds to the ball to give Juventus a 1-zip lead.

The response from Juventus almost comes in the form of the dreaded auto goal, but Geovany Rodriguez recovers in time to make the score.

Again, Sagitun tries to even the score; unfortunately this spot kick is right at Rodriguez.

At the other end, Roberto da Silva shows off his left foot, which simply does not impress Darren Hinds. On this Juventus press its Danny Tun?s turn to fire at Hinds, but the pill inches outside the sticks.

Just before the half expires, Hilberto Muschamp fires this half volley that forces Rodriguez into a spectacular save and at the half it?s a 1-zip O.W. lead.

So we go to second half and we?re twelve minutes in when Christopher Hendricks finds Daniel Thomas who can?t convert, but the ball bounces to Christopher who strikes for this second goal of the match giving Juventus a 2-zip lead. Juventus looks for more when Danny Tun fires this beauty, but it?s right at Hinds.

Now, meet the educated left foot of Wilmer Garcia whose launch from this spot kick forces Geovany Rodriguez into the best save of the day.

Meanwhile, this corner kick finds Hilberto Muschamp who might have used his hands, but the O.W. defence digs it out before it counts.

It?s getting late so Sagitun goes to Wilmer Garcia, but the ball recoils off the crossbar.

Nevertheless, Sagitun continue the pressure when Robert Muschamp fires this wicked left foot, but again Rodriguez is up to the task–when the long whistle comes it brings a 2-zip W for Juventus over Sagitun at Independence.

Game II certainly now comes up this Sunday at the People?s Stadium O.W. where Sagitun must win to force a game three or else let?s just say it?s going to be closed curtains.

Turning to the Semi-pro basketball scene, two ballgames were concluded Friday night at the City Centre. The four minutes thirty-seven seconds remaining from the first meeting between Orange Walk and Kruzzaz and of course the rematch.

It?s a two point ballgame when Steven Williams gets the rock and strikes for two. On the very next play Seroki again hooks up with Williams and again he knocks the three to give the Kruzzaz a two point lead. And they would seal the deal from the free throw line to post the eighty-five ? eighty one big W.

Meanwhile, game two certainly was a different matter as Roger Favela comes out firing for O.W.–hitting his first of four pin pointers in the very first quarter. Favela then goes right side and gets similar results. Hey guys, we told you Favela is hot, so will please put a body on the player okay.

On the very next play Favela strikes again, nobody listen obviously. This would have made it five three pointers in the quarter, but he steps inside the line to make it a long two and at the end of the quarter, O.W. is up by eleven points.

So we fast forward to the fourth quarter and it?s eight seconds to go in regulation when Steven Williams heaves up this three tie the ball game at seventy-eight apiece and we?re in for overtime.

We?re tired at eighty-three apiece in overtime play when Kirk Shabba Smith misses the baseline jumper–quickly Bainton picks it up and goes all the way down court for points, picks up the foul–he would miss the extra points.

O.W. goes on to win eighty-five ? eighty-three in overtime.

In the other match staged on Saturday in the BBA league Corozal Dolphins rolled over a tired O.W. Warriors a hundred and eleven to ninety-three points.

Okay folks, that?s our show for the day, we certainly invite you back same time, same place next week. Jah, over all I?m James Adderley.
