Two cyclists dead in road mishaps
Two bicyclists have lost their lives in separate traffic accidents over the weekend. On Friday afternoon around three thirty, thirty-one year old Jose Domingo Catalan, a resident of La Democracia, was knocked down by a vehicle travelling between miles twenty-eight and twenty-nine on the Western Highway. He suffered numerous head and body injuries and died on his way to the hospital. The driver of the car, forty-five year old Godwin Sutherland of Belmopan, remains under investigation by police. Approximately twenty-four hours later, this time on the Southern Highway near the Kanantik junction, Mauro Guardado of Maya King Village, was knocked off his bike. Guardado was pronounced dead on arrival at Southern Regional Hospital. The car that hit him, a Mazda Protege, was being driven by thirty-five year Gabriel Ramos. Ramos, a football player with Sagitun, was on his way to Belmopan for the night match with the Bandits. He was detained and released by police, pending the outcome of their investigation.
