CARICOM heads debate Haiti recognition

CARICOM heads of government, meeting in Grenada, today continued to wade through a packed agenda. The question of Haiti was debated and, according to a Belize government Press Office release, Prime Minister Said Musa noted that the question of whether to recognise Haiti’s interim government was a political, not a legal one. The fact that the United Nations was very much involved in that country’s stabilization, he said, should influence CARICOM’s decision. This afternoon Musa also took the opportunity to update leaders on the Guatemalan claim to Belize, after which they gave full support to the OAS facilitation process. The summit also reviewed other territorial disputes in the region including those between Venezuela and Guyana and Venezuela and Eastern Caribbean states. Final plans for the implementation of the Caribbean Court of Justice were also discussed.
