2 dead in P.G. murder/suicide
Despite a record pace of violent crime, the double killing known as murder/suicide is still a rarity in Belize. On Monday night, however, that senseless tragedy struck the tightly knit Southern town of Punta Gorda. Police there are still trying to find out what caused forty-four year old Adrian Genus to murder his twenty-seven year old common law wife Sarai Ramirez and then kill himself. According to police, the murder/suicide occurred inside a bar called Tony’s Billiards where the couple worked; he as a security guard, she in the kitchen. Around ten-thirty, Genus walked into the club armed with a sixteen-gauge shotgun and without a word fired a single blast to Ramirez’s head. Genus then ran for a hundred yards or so, stopped, pointed the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. At the crime scene, authorities found a suicide note along with one hibiscus flower. Police would not disclose the contents of the letter, but told News 5 they strongly suspect the incident is the result of jealousy. According to reports, Ramirez and Genus lived together for ten years, but had a sometimes-rocky relationship. One source tells News 5 that on Monday morning, Genus was looking for Ramirez and remarked that he and Ramirez had a serious quarrel. Genus was said to claim that Ramirez wanted to send him to jail, but remarked that he would not be going anywhere. The couple is survived by a seven-year-old daughter.
According to our records, the last murder/suicide in Belize occurred on September fifth of last year at the Hammer Club on King Street when thirty-two year old Lyle Jenkins fatally shot his twenty-three year old lover, Dominga Pop, before turning the gun on himself.
