“Vision of Yucatan” opens at Mexican Institute

The steady stream of cultural activities continues in Belize City with what seems like a new event opening virtually every week. Tonight the venue is the Mexican Cultural Institute and the medium is photography. News 5’s Jacqueline Woods has a preview.

The first time that Mexican photographer Eduardo Arco visited Belize was as a tourist in 1975. Today he is back in the country, but this time he has brought with him snapshots of home, particularly the state of Yucatan.

?For me it was very important to show in Belize. As I was telling you, I think we need more to really interchange culture and interchange between Belize and Mexico. And for me it was very important for me to show here so people could have a little glimpse of what is this part of Mexico.?

?Photography was born in black and white, later it became colour. For me the main difference is that usually in colour, when we see a colour picture, we see colours first then later maybe we?ll see that it?s this and it?s that, but the colours are the first that flashes us. And in black and white, no, we don?t have that colour bringing us so we concentrate more on what is the image.?

The images include people, landscapes, and architecture that he believes represents the past and present. Arco says, unfortunately, some of the architecture has already been lost to so-called development.

?For the last thirty years they have really destroyed a lot of nice buildings in Maryland and in a lot cities in Yucatan. And for me, I was conscious in the beginning and I tried to take pictures of all the buildings that I knew they are going to tear down one day.?

Arco is hoping that youths will become interested in the art of photography, and that also Belizeans will be inspired to visit the state of Yucatan. Jacqueline Woods for News 5.
