Cops ordered to ease up on micro weed busts

In the midst of a wave of violent crime that has lasted far too long for comfort the police high command has finally gotten around to exercising some common sense. In a memo from Eastern Division Commander Maureen Leslie, the officers have been instructed to lay off busting street people for ridiculously small amounts of marijuana. The “suggestion”, which we are told involves quantities less than two grams–about the size of a small spliff–should have the effect of freeing up cops to focus on more serious crimes. The same should also apply to the courts and Hattieville Prison, both of which may see a reduced throughput of “offenders” whose biggest offence seems remarkably similar to drinking a rum and coke or a Belikin.

No doubt there will be those who interpret the latest move as a victory for drug pushers and a hamstringing of police, who often use petty drug busts to harass known criminals–not to mention otherwise innocent youths. But it must be remembered that the marijuana laws are still on the books and can be enforced at any time. Hopefully the politicians will use the same common sense as the police and give the new initiative a chance.
