2 dead, 1 critical in Spanish Lookout crash

Meanwhile, a man has been arrested in connection with another deadly accident that occurred in the Cayo District over the weekend. According to San Ignacio police around twelve-fifteen on Sunday afternoon, twenty-three year old Jorge Freissen, a resident of Spanish Lookout, was driving his Plymouth van on the Spanish Lookout Road toward Blackman Eddy. Inside the van were Friessen’s wife and ten other passengers. Around a mile and a half from Spanish Lookout, Freissen said that he noticed a white pickup truck coming in the opposite direction. As he approached the vehicle, he saw a Ford Ranger pickup, overtake the white vehicle. In order to avoid a collision, Friesen hugged the side of the road, but the Ranger, driven by twenty-six year old Mark Dueck, still managed to hit the rear side of the van causing it to run off the road and overturn. Twenty-six year old Anna Giesbrecht, her four-year-old daughter, Susie, and a month old baby were thrown from the van. The baby died on the spot, while Giesbrecht and her daughter were rushed to La Loma Luz Hospital. Giesbrecht died while undergoing treatment in Belize City, but her daughter remains in a critical condition at Universal Health Services. Dueck has been charged with manslaughter by negligence, causing death by careless conduct, driving without due care and attention, and improper overtaking. Police have also detained the driver of the white pickup pending further investigations.
