Basketball, Softball & Cycling in Sports Monday

Good evening I’m James Adderley and this is Sports Monday.

Certainly was a biggie at Birds Isle Friday night in Interoffice Basketball play as Heritage Bank Heatz challenged the supremacy of the league leaders Mayan Man Warriors in what turned out to be a low scoring affair. Winston Pratt got the Warriors off to the quick start with this triple and the MVP candidate would record a 2 double of 13 points and 10 rebounds. However tonight you’d want to keep your eyes on Mr. Andrew Ortiz who came out tonight bent on making a big time statement. At the end of the 1st quarter we’re tied at 14 apiece. Andrew Ortiz opens the quarter with this monster one hand slam and guess what people he would lead all players with 21 points, 17 rebounds and an efficiency rating of 27 – all game highs. Nevertheless, this bucket by Winston Pratt gives Mayan Man Warriors a 27 – 18 lead. Heritage Bank roars back Felix Martinez spot up for 3 and would sink 16 points and pull 10 rebounds. And this bucket by Martinez gives the Heatz a 33 – 28 lead at the half. In the 3rd Marlon Andrewin slices through the Bank’s defence for 2 of his 11 games points as Heritage looks to extend the lead. At the other end Marvin Skeet’s put back helps the Warriors to remain within striking distance. Skeet would hit 13 points tonight. Ortiz then finds an open Rico Black who swishes in for 2 of his 10 points. Sheldon Williams gets the long pass for the easy 2 and would finish with 2 doubles of 11 points and 10 rebounds. At the buzzer to the end of the 3rd quarter Marlon Andrewin gives his team a 9-point lead with this penetration. Take in the 4th quarter Marvin Skeet lands this triple to cut the lead to 3 points. Winston Pratt the goes left to cut the deficit to 1. However, Andrewin sinks 2 clutch free throws as Heritage Bank Heatz slays the Mayan Man Warriors 66 to 62. In the nightcap Belize Bank Bulldogs took down the Civil Aviation Drones 103 to 93 and in other results Atlantic Bank beat Infotel 80 to 74. Belize City Dragons bombed Bowen and Bowen 93 to 74. Belize City Council Dragons demolishes BTL 91 to 71. BWS outlasted Central Health 98 to 93 and Atlantic Bank beat Bowen and Bowen 67 to 57.

On Friday in Senior Softball play, B.T.L. won by the mercy rule in the 6th inning over Belize Bank in a 7 – zip score. In the undercard, interoffice play saw K.H.M.H. edge National Sports Council 8 to 7. Saturdays interoffice action saw Guardian Bombers give the Sports Council its second loss in arrow in a 2 – zip affair.

Finally, in cycling news, we caught up with the C-Ray Cycling Summer Series and we began with the female over 12, 8 laps race and its Taralee Ordonez taking top honours while Alicee King pedals in for 2nd and SiyaSwasey finishes 3rd. In the male mountain bike/beach cruiser 2 laps, Nelson Zayden emerged as the winner. Triston Gentle finishes 2nd and Nathan Savery pulled 3rd. In Category C 9 to 12 years, 5 laps Derrick Chavarria took top honours, Kenyon Stanford pulled up 2nd and Alba Perrote rounds out the top 3. Byron Polanco was unchallenged for the W in the Cat B 13 to 15 years. Six seconds later Nelson Zyden pulled up for 2nd place. And Tevin Chaplin rolled in for 3rd place. Now here’s the monster Category A 16 to 18 years end its quite a field, 15 laps later it’s a jubilant Patrick Williams who rolls in unchallenged for the number one spot. The sprint for the runner-up finds a threesome and its Darien Anderson who capture that prize, Anthony Marin is 3rd while Ernest Bradley rounds out the top 4.
