Twins receive scholarships to U.S. Naval Academy
Belizean students have made their mark at scores of universities around the world, but two recent graduates of S.J.C. Junior College will be charting a new course in September. Javier and Andrea Bosch will take their place in the freshman class at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. Javier told News 5 that he and his twin sister responded to an advertisement in the newspaper and were very surprised when they got the call.
Javier Bosch, Scholarship Recipient
“We went through many rigorous tests and an entire long process, starting for the officer selection, competing with many I would say worthy students. After we were selected or nominated to go to West Point or any of the service academies, then we were taken through the process of going through the multiple tests that were required to enter the service academies, which we were accepted to the naval academy.”
Andrea Bosch, Scholarship Recipient
“Well it’s definitely important and it has struck a very large impact on Belize and upon myself, and it opens a lot of doors definitely for all of young Belizeans coming out of high school, sixth forms, and hopefully a lot of other people will take up on this opportunity.”
Patrick Jones
“Were you surprised when you got it?”
Andrea Bosch
“Definitely. I didn’t expect to get accepted, but a lot of hard work and dedication definitely pays off.”
Javier will seek a Bachelor’s degree in economics, while Andrea will study for a Bachelor’s in computer science. Upon graduating the scholarship recipients will return to serve in the Belize Defence Force for at least two years with the rank of Second Lieutenant.
