46 officers honoured to open Police Week

With the nation reeling from a weekend of deadly violence, including a cop charged with hit and run manslaughter, it is almost painful to note that this is Police Week. On Sunday morning the week was officially launched with Governor General Sir Colville Young inspecting a guard of honour and the presentation of awards to forty-six members of the Police Department.

?The long service medal is a long coveted item for most police officers. As you may have noticed, more of the officers have upwards of twenty-eight to thirty years of service. I have served almost thirty-one years and I was noting that a number of the officers are in fact people who enlisted back in the 70s when the Police Department saw things differently. We are dealing with modern times now and there have been a lot of changes.?

?To the people out there, we really appreciate the effort. I believe we are now seeing a lot more working between the police and the community. So the team, the community and the police working together is in fact taking place.?
