Red Cross Receives Hurricane Earl Donation from BECOL/FORTIS
The Belize Red Cross continues to receive donations to assist with hurricane relief in the aftermath of Earl. The Category One storm wreaked havoc primarily in the northern section of the Belize District, leaving in its wake significant damages. On Monday, BECOL, in its capacity as a corporate citizen, handed over quite a handsome donation to the non-profit organization. Those funds, a total of two hundred thousand Belize dollars, will be disbursed to needy families affected by the hurricane. According to CEO Lyn Young, the monetary contribution was the initiative of BECOL and its parent company Fortis.
Lyn Young, Chief Executive Officer, BECOL
“What happened is that immediately after the hurricane the CEO of Fortis contacted me and he asked, you know, what can Fortis do and they would like to do it through BECOL to help the victims of the hurricane and, you know, we discussed it and we decided that we should do a donation through the Red Cross because the Red Cross, I mean, is one of the premier organizations in the world that looks after people after emergencies like these. It’s a very good organization and of course I know Lily myself, so we agreed on making a donation of two hundred thousand dollars to the Red Cross and the Red Cross will, I think they will use it primarily in their cash transfer program to help the most needy victims of the hurricane and there are a lot but they are the ones with the expertise to do the assessment and to make these donations. So we are working through the Red Cross, it’s two hundred thousand dollars from BECOL and Fortis to assist the victims of the hurricane.”
