V.I.P. Maintains Support for Section 53 Despite Court Decision
The political party Vision Inspired by the People says it stands in full support of Section Fifty-three of Belize’s Criminal Code and still wants the Government of Belize to appeal the decision to strike down that piece of law, despite Government saying that it will not. In a press release, VIP says that, “its support for this provision is expressly to uphold, protect and preserve the general order of nature and the public interest, specifically the unhindered continuance of natural human procreation.” It adds that it promotes traditional family life environment as one of its five critical pillars for national development for an emerging Belize. VIP also argues that contrary to the opinion given by the Chief Justice that sex as referred to in the Constitution concerns sexual orientation of citizens, the legislature intended that it refers to gender, as in male or female, and so it asks current legislators to clarify and protect the original intention, thus ensuring that the courts can make future decisions in conformity with the spirit of the Constitution.
