Government truck sets bad example

While our crew was on the highway en route to their assignment in St. Matthew’s, the camera took note of a problem that has become increasingly common. Drivers on the Western Highway are very familiar with the large number of dump trucks on the road, and for the most part, thanks to laws passed several years ago, most loaded trucks, like these, carry the required tarpaulin to minimize the dangerous spillage from their pans. One exception recorded by the camera today, however, was this government dump truck, fully loaded with windshield shattering gravel, and not a protective tarp in sight.

We are informed by the Department of Transport that the hundred-dollar fine for such offences applies equally to private and government vehicles and that the G.O.B. trucks are monitored even more closely to set an example. Hopefully, those in charge in Belmopan will take note. We are also informed that consideration is being given to raising the fine as the hundred dollars has not resulted in sufficient compliance.
